In a bid to ensure that young people are actively participating in the fight against climate change, YONECO has started training members of various youth clubs from the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Katuli in Mangochi in tree nursery management.

Just like many parts of Malawi, Katuli area has suffered wanton cut down of trees thereby vindicating the need for vigorous afforestation activities. Thus, building the capacity of young people to plant and manage forest trees is one way of nurturing and ensuring sustainability of a tree planting and protecting culture at community level.

“Planting trees is one thing and ensuring the survival of the trees that have been planted is also another and all these two stages are very significant in afforestation,” said YONECO’s Project Officer, Grant Dulla.

It is expected that the youth will use the skills they will acquire in these trainings to grow enough seedlings that will be ready for transplanting in the forthcoming tree planting season.
